Cardiovascular autonomic modulation following maximal exercise: Its relationship to race, maximal oxygen uptake, and resting heart rate variability . $69 The purpose of this dissertation was to provide a better understanding of post maximal exercise cardiovascular autonomic function and its relationship to race, VO2max and resting heart rate variability. Heart rate variability (HRV) and heart rate recovery (HRR) are two non-invasive methods to assess cardiovascular autonomic modulation. This dissertation covers three studies. The first study examined the difference in cardiac autonomic function at rest and following maximal exercise between 30 white and 30 black college-age men. The results showed that black men had significantly greater HRV measures at rest, significantly faster heart rate recovery 2-minutes after exercise and significantly greater HRV during a 30-minute post-exercise period compared to the white men. The second study sought to determine the association of race, VO2max, and selected body composition measures to HRR. In this study, seventy-two college-aged men were divided into two groups above and below the mean VO2max of the entire sample (46.32 ml/kg/min) as follows: group 1 (ModFit, n = 36) had a mean VO2max of 39.99 +/- 4.01 ml/kg/min; and Group 2 (HiFit, n = 36) had a mean VO2max of 52.66 +/- 5.30 ml/kg/min. After comparing the mean heart rate recovery between the two groups, no significant difference was found. However, after controlling for the influence of race, a significant difference between groups in heart rate recovery 2-minutes (HRR2) was revealed, i.e., the HiFit group had a greater HRR2 compared to the LoFit group. Also, backwards linear regression procedures revealed that race was the most significant variable at accounting for the variation in HRR2 and the heart rate at 2-minutes post-exercise. The third study examined the relationship between resting HRV and HRR. The results of this study revealed no association between HRR and any of the resting HRV. Comparison of oxygen consumption on different brands of elliptical trainers in the development of a metabolic prediction equation. $49.99 Purpose. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the effect of elliptical trainer brand on gas exchange data as well as to develop separate equations that are specific to certain brands. Methods. Twenty-three healthy volunteers participated in the study (22.3 +/- 4.6 yrs, 172 +/- 8.2 cm, 67.5 +/- 9.3 kg). Subjects completed a treadmill VO2max test to determine fitness level, followed by two testing sessions on two different brands of elliptical trainers, the Precor EFX 576iRTM and the TRUE TS1RTM. Subjects exercised at the same watt level on each elliptical trainer as determined by resistance and cadence. Elliptical trainers and testing sessions were randomly assigned so that each subject was measured on each machine for six 5-minute stages for a total exercise time of 30 minutes per session. Oxygen consumption (VO2), heart rate, rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and caloric cost of the exercise were measured during each session. A 2 (machine) x 3 (workload) repeated measures ANOVA was used to analyze differences between machines. Stepwise multiple nonlinear regression analysis was used to develop metabolic equations for submaximal elliptical trainer exercise on both the Precor and TRUE. Results. Significant differences were found between elliptical trainer brands for all variables analyzed (p<0.001), with the TRUE eliciting higher values than the Precor for equivalent watt output readings. Oxygen consumption values at the same watt output reading were 6.85 +/- 4.4 ml/kg/min higher on the TRUE for watt levels between 107 and 131 watts. Two separate metabolic equations were developed for submaximal elliptical trainer exercise on the TRUE (R2 = 0.95, SEE = 2.6), and the Precor (R2 = 0.92, SEE = 2.4). Conclusion. Differences exist in physiological responses to submaximal elliptical trainer exercise at the same machine-given watt levels. Effect of acute dynamic and static stretching on maximal muscular power in a sample of college age recreational athletes. $49.99 The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of dynamic and static stretching on muscular peak power production and hip and knee range of motion in a sample of college age recreational males. Forty-two males (aged 18-24) healthy, physically active volunteers from a University of Pittsburgh physical education class participated as subjects in this investigation. Subjects performed pre and post test measures of sit and reach, hip and knee goniometry measures, and vertical jump test. A one repetition maximum leg press was performed prior to pre-tests to determine group differences in strength. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of three stretch groups (dynamic, static, and control). All subjects began with a five minute warm-up on an upright cycle that elevated the heart rate to 110 beats per minute. Following the warm-up period, subjects immediately began their stretching program (dynamic or static), or remained seated for 12 minutes. A one-way ANOVA was conducted to detect group differences in strength levels conducted during pre-tests. A 3×2 factorial ANOVA was conducted to determine between and within group differences in treatment groups. Statistical significance was set at alpha = 0.05. Results of the investigation showed significant time effects for all dependent measures (p < 0.05). Significant time x treatment interactions were found for maximum jump height, maximum peak power, and sit and reach in the DS and SS + DS groups, respectively (p < 0.05). However, there was no time x treatment interactions for mean jump height, mean peak power, knee range of motion, or hip range of motion. The results of the present study suggest that static and dynamic stretching for 20 seconds prior to a vertical jump can improve mean vertical jump height, mean peak power, and hip and knee range of motion in a sample of male college age recreational athletes. Effects of heart rate variability biofeedback-assisted stress management training on pregnant women and fetal heart rate measures. $69 This study examined effectiveness of heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback-assisted stress management training in reducing anxiety and stress in pregnant women and the effect of maternal stress management skills practice on fetal heart rate measures in real time. Participants were seven working pregnant women who volunteered in response to recruitment announcements and invitations from cooperating midwives. Reported state and trait anxiety and pregnancy specific stress were measured during five 45- to 50-minute training sessions. Training included bibliotherapy, instruction in the use of emotion-focused stress management techniques, and HRV biofeedback. Subjects used portable biofeedback units for home practice and were encouraged to practice the skills for 20 minutes a day and for short periods of time during stressful life events. At the end of training, fetal heart rate was monitored and concurrent maternal HRV measures were recorded.;Repeated measures ANOVA and paired samples t-test analysis of study data revealed no statistically significant reductions in state or trait anxiety measures or in pregnancy specific stress measures. Partial eta squared (n²) and Cohen’s d calculations found small to medium effect sizes on the various test scales. Friedman’s analysis of variance of biofeedback measures showed a statistically significant decrease in low HRV coherence scores (X2 = 10.53, p = .03) and medium HRV coherence scores ( X2 = 11.58, p = .02) and a statistically significant increase in high HRV coherence scores (X2 = 18.16, p = .001). This change is an indication of improved autonomic function. Results of concurrent maternal and fetal HRV recordings were generally inconclusive. A qualitative discussion of individual subject results is included.
