Scientific Boxing: The Deluxe Edition $19.84 In 1892, "Gentleman" James J. Corbett defeated John L. Sullivan to become the heavyweight champion of the world. Using his own "scientific boxing" techniques, Corbett delivered a blistering lesson to the previously unbeatable Sullivan, ending the fight with a knockout in the 21st round. With Corbett’s win, a new era in boxing began. ***** Corbett is considered by many to be the "father of modern boxing" for being the first person to apply scientific principles to the art of pugilism. In "Scientific Boxing," the creator of such boxing innovations as the "left hook" distills his scientific methodology into an accessible manual of boxing techniques. This classic book contains sections on fundamental boxing techniques, fouling techniques, and the various boxing rules of his time. ***** This deluxe edition of "Scientific Boxing" contains additional photos and an added account of the fight between Corbett and Sullivan. ***** James J. Corbett (1866-1933) held the title of heavyweight champion from 1892 to 1897. He was the first to win the title under the Marquis of Queensberry rules. College educated, Corbett was also an actor, writer, and boxing coach. ***** "Corbett marked the turning point in ring history, replacing mauling sluggers with the new school of faster, scientific boxers." 100 Years of Boxing $12.69 A visual history of one hundred years of British boxing. Contains around 300 photographs from PA Photos’ huge archives, spanning the whole of the 20th Century. Charting the changing face of amateur and professional boxing over one hundred years, the photographs in this book give readers a flavor of the skill, brutality and grace of the sport, celebrating the heroes and anti heroes of the ring, the triumphs, controversies and tragedies of a sport that pits man against man or, in the modern era, woman against woman, with only their fists as weapons and agility their defense. |

Excerpt: 1863 in sports describes the year’s events in world sport.Baseball National championship Events Boxing Events Cricket Events England Football Rules begin{sloppypar item 26 October foundation by local clubs of the Football Association (FA) in London. The first set of Laws is drafted, based mainly on the Cambridge University Rules . The purpose is to regulate English football under a single code of rules, but the rugby football clubs do not join because of the ball handling issue. Their attempt at compromise between the “dribbling” and “handling” codes is rejected by the dribblers and so rugby football becomes in time an entirely separate sport. The FA rules establish association football (aka football or “soccer”) as a distinct sport. item Apart from their main purpose of introducing standard rules of play and procedure, the Laws seek to differentiate between association football and rugby football. The essential difference in the two codes is encapsulated in Laws 9 and 11 which state that no (outfield) player shall run with the ball (in his hands) and that no (outfield) player shall throw the ball or pass it to another with his hands. The Laws will be amended later to clarify the situation at throw ins and during possession by goalkeepers but the FA is emphatic from the start that “hand ball” is illegal during normal play. item These Laws are originally known as the “London Rules” because they are only adopted by some London clubs and hardly anywhere else. Several clubs existed in Sheffield at the time and they played to the socalled Sheffield Rules . Gradually the FA, led by Charles Alcock , manages to persuade the clubs that a uniform set of rules is desirable and, after many adaptations and compromises, the FA rules eventually become standard. item The rejection of |

1950s In Sports $19.99 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: During the 1950s, a couple of relatively new developments changed the world: World War II had only been over for five years when the decade of the 50s began, and television was beginning to make a major impact internationally. In boxing, changes connected to these developments could be seen too, as boxers who fought at the 1940s conflict returned to their homes and many of them were back in the ring. Television producers were in love with sports, which provided the viewer with an opportunity to observe sporting events live, and boxing was not the exception to the rules; many television networks began to feature fights live during the weekends, and the Gillette Friday Night Fights proved to be one of the most popular boxing television series in American history. The dawn of the jet airplane era in 1958 also helped boxing expand worldwide: with airplanes flying faster and more frequently between cities far away from each other, more and more world title fights began to be fought outside the United States. Vic Toweel became South Africa’s first world boxing champion, Jimmy Carruthers did the same for Australia, Pascual Pérez was the first from Argentina, Yoshio Shirai (who was beaten by Pérez), won Japan’s first world title, and Hogan Bassey won the first belt for Nigeria. Popular American fighters in the 1950s proved legendary: Sugar Ray Robinson would still win (and lose) world titles, Rocky Marciano became the only heavyweight world champion in history to retire undefeated. Jersey Joe Walcott the oldest heavyweight chamapion (until George Foreman regained the title in 1994), Archie Moore broke the all-time knockout record as well as the record for the oldest champion, at 48, for any division, Ezzard Charles proved to be a reliable substitute … |

A Scandalous Freedom $15.99 Christians do not trust freedom. As author Steve Brown explains in this brave new book, they prefer the security of rules and self-imposed boundaries, which they tend to inflict on other Christians. Brown asserts that real freedom means the freedom to be wrong as well as right. Christianity often calls us to live beyond the boundaries, bolstered by the assurance that we cannot fall beyond God’s love. Freedom is dangerous, but the alternative is worse — boxing ourselves up where we cannot celebrate our unique gifts and express our joy in Christ. Each of the book’s eleven chapters explores a common pharisaic, freedom-stifling tendency, then opens the door to the fresh air of a remedial liberty. A reader’s delight, A Scandalous Freedom sometimes shocks with challenges to prevailing wisdom, but it follows up with compelling validations of our need to celebrate real, unstinted freedom in Christ. |

Boxing Rules In 60 Seconds – Know Your Shi$
Boxing’s Bare Knuckle Pioneers
Before the formal boxing games started, we have the rough, bare knuckle fist fights that began during the 18th century in England. Shortly afterward, the sport got bigger in America. From both these places, champions were created and below are the profiles of some of the pioneer boxing champions who helped bring about boxing as we know it.
The first boxing champion to be noted was James Fig, who had a 15 year reign as a champion. Fig wore the championship crown until he died in 1740. Then the father of boxing James Broughton took over, he was a very good boxer but was more remembered for his work in formalizing boxing rules. He set up the foundation for Broughton boxing rules which served as the first set of basic boxing rules that boxers followed till 1838, and it was about 2 years after this that he by accident killed an opponent in the ring.
His rules were brought about to stop the free for all brawls that quite frequently happened in boxing arenas as well as shaping the art of boxing. It was because of him that boxers began to see how important it was to practice the systematic boxing techniques, instead of haphazardly throwing punches.
It was when Daniel Mendoza, showed in the ring a systematic approach to the boxing sport that it finally was freed from being an anything goes sport. He brought about a more thought out, scientific approach to the sport, where boxers were using strategies and skills. It is ironic to think he was only a champion for one year that being from 1794 to 1795.
By this time boxing was already getting popular in America. Therefore, the two free African-American champions Bill Richmond and Tom Molineux got in matches with the best British fighters, and the championship was brought home. It was at the time of 1810 that Tom Molineux became the very first American champion when he won the match against Tom Cribb.
In America in 1816 the first boxing match was held with British boxing rules between Jacob Hyer and Tom Beasley. It was twenty years later that, the then reigning British champion James Burke also known as “the deaf” by ship went to New Orleans to have a match with the Irish champion Sam O’Rourke. It was in the year 1841 that the first formal American boxing championship took place between Jacob Hyer’s son Tom Hyer and Yankee Sullivan.
Shortly after this, John Heenan, who was more known as The Benica boy went to England to get in a match with Tom Sawyer this being one of the first transatlantic fights. Tom Sawyer was the reigning English champion at that point.
What was known as The London Prize Ring Rules was at that point the only set of rules in boxing, until 1867 when the Marques of Queensberry brought about a new set of rules. At this point this was somehow the mother of the modern boxing rules as the rules that were being enforced at that time resembled the old rules to a certain degree. The new set of rules required that boxers wear gloves and that each round should only be 3 minutes.
The public liked this and agreed with it and these new rules came into play. Under the Queensberry Rules the last pre-modern boxing champion John L Sullivan was the champion. He was also known in reference to the bare knuckles fights as the last champion of that and also the first heavy weight champion.
Whether its from the bloody brawls of the working classes or a high class boxing match between nobles, boxing has definitely made itself popular and made some boxing greats worthy of being put in boxing’s hall of fame.
