What Does Your Watch Say: Types of Watches and How They Work
Article by Cyndy Hardy
You’ve been asked, “What does your watch say?” But have you considered what your watch says about you?
You want a watch that captures more than just time; you want a watch that expresses your individuality. With so many types to choose from, which timepiece has the form and functions best suited for your lifestyle?
People have donned watches since the Renaissance when women first wore them on decorative bracelets, according to the National Watch & Clock Museum in Columbia, Penn. Military men began using watches in the 19th century, but the trend didn’t catch on with the general public until after world war 1. By 1943, the wristwatch had replaced the pocket watch in popularity. Watches have since appeared in accessories like rings, pendants and key chains.
All timepieces contain three basic parts: a drive mechanism, such as gears and a mainspring; an escapement, or way of controlling how energy is released from the drive mechanism in a way that measures time; and a method of displaying time. By definition, watches are portable timepieces. Clocks, historically, are more stationary and usually have chimes or bells.
Analog watches display time with hour and minute hands. Digital watches display time in numbers on little Liquid Crystal Display or Light Emitting Diode screens. You might remember LCD watches as those that show black numbers on a grey background and LED watches as numbers made up of little red lights.
There are many power sources for watch drive mechanisms:
In manual-wind watches, you wind the spring by turning the crown.
Self-winding watches have a weight that winds the spring when you move.
Battery-operated watches contain a small electric cell that keeps the watch running.
Kinetic watches don’t need batteries. Like the self-winding watch, they contain oscillating weights but these turn magnetic charges into electric energy.
Light-powered watches turn indoor or outdoor light into electric energy.
Thermal-powered watches convert your body heat into electric energy.
Quartz crystals vibrate when mechanical pressure or voltage from a battery is applied. The crystals can be cut to generate an electric charge at a frequency consistent for timekeeping.
Today’s watches often do more than keep time. Thanks to advertising, today’s watches also make a visible statement about you. Doesn’t “Rolex” make you think of success? Maybe “Timex” conjures an image of the classic working man.
Called “complication” watches, they can count your laps around the track or in the swimming pool, track how fast you go, wake you up in the morning, and tell you what time it is in Istanbul or how deep you dive.
Even more complicated, some timepieces can monitor your heart rate, trace the concentration of elements in your blood or pinpoint your location using GPS (Global Positioning System) technology. The Linux WatchPad™ even straps a personal computer to your wrist.
How much you’ll pay for your ideal timepiece depends on the mix of form and function that’s right for you. If strictly function is your goal, you can probably get a free watch in the cereal isle of your favorite grocery store.
If you want the best of the best, Forbes lists the 834-part Vacheron Constantin Tour de l’Ile as the world’s most complicated watch at a reported USD$1.5 million. The world’s most expensive watch is reportedly the Chopard 201-carat watch, which is tagged at USD$25 million.
So, what does your watch say about you?
